Bonus Tip Before getting started. Bring the Energy from the moment they log on. 

1. Pump up the Music. 

Instead of simply waiting for the students to log on and sit waiting board. Do not simply just say we are waiting for a few more to get on. We are waiting for a specific person. Hype up the meeting and use some fun music. 

2. Engage in the Chat.

Make sure that you are using the chat to constantly be interactive. For example. at the end of my speeches at schools I make every student pick up their finger into a #1 and scream "I am a Champion". In a zoom meeting simply say type in the chat "I am a Champion".

3. Challenges

Give them specific challenge at the end. Today do 1 homework problem with your parent. Tell you parent the favorite thing you just learned. Text a friend "I just learned this about ______". 

4. Restroom break? just saying

5. Make them laugh at your lesson

Do you have some funny pictures or interesting facts when you do screen sharing? Could you use a meme? I was working with a middle school teacher that has funny memes in his background of his lessons. 

6. Rewards Rewards Rewards

Have some kind of rewards for extra participation in the chats, on screen, etc...

7. Say my name say my name

Read back some of the great comments that students post. Once a few people share more are likely to share so they can get the reward of hearing their answer put on display. 

8. Show a little personality.

Are you a fun teacher that likes to lip sing? do it. Do you like dad jokes? They love to hate them. 

9. Secret Guest Speaker

Do you have a cat? a dog? You could invite another teacher or just another friend. I was a guest recently to a friends meeting just to give a quick 2 minute pump up speech to her students. 

10. Do something crazy. I recently did a half day camp for an organization and it was completely digital. I normally do a push up with someone standing on my back. I wondered how I can i be creative. One major lessons in my programs is what we put into our mind. I used a sponge and drank clean water. Then I used the sponge to Drink juice. Then I got dirty soap water and I was not about to drink that. Simple way to explain a point but still works digitally or in person.
