Engage Leadership: Student Success & Student Leadership Series 8

May 30, 2020

Jonathan Medina- "Where your engagement goes, your success follows."

Have you ever noticed that whatever activities you invest or spend the most time in your success goes? As a Student Leader you often have to make a decision on what activities and what organizations you can be truly engaged in. If you are engaged in one organization more than the other you will experience more success.

There is an old parable of 2 wolves. Usually the story is told with one wolf representing Anger and the other a positive emotion such as Compassion. The story goes that 2 wolves go to battle each day with one another. Each day the wolves battle one wins over the other. As the wolves grow one wolf begins to win more than the other. Eventually the one wolf is stronger than the other and always wins. Which is the wolf that becomes stronger? The wolf that eats more grows bigger and stronger and has success.

I tell that story to say that whatever activities we want to be successful in need to be fed with the nutrition of Engagement. When we are engaged in activities we become successful.

There is an old quote from a great philosopher named John Mayer (Philosopher is a joke. He is a song writer). The Chorus of his song goes, "I keep on waiting, waiting, waiting for the world to change." A Student Leader does not wait for the world to change. A Student Leader engages and goes and changes the world. A Student Leader goes and starts a movement to better the world. A Student Leader sees a need on their campus and engages in activities to fix the problem. A Student Leader does not wait.

What if Christopher Columbus stayed at home. What if JK Rowlings never wrote the Hairy Potter Series. What if Dr. King didn't share his dream. What if Micheal Jordan didn't try to fly?

What if, what if, what if???

I love what the Quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks says about what ifs. Russell Wilson "Always give your best effort so your memories won't be filled with: would-haves, could-haves, should-haves, and what-ifs." Best way to not have what ifs is to give your best effort (Engagement).

Abraham Lincoln "Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle."

Remember You are a Champion. Champions Engage and Change the World. It's GAMETIME.
